Verbal and nonverbal communication from television

I decided to watch a show I have never heard of. The show was called Airport 24 7 Miami. The show centered on the daily operation of in and out the Airport. Many characters were traveling through Airport showing varieties of emotions. The body language of each person was interesting to watch as they traveled through the large airport.  When the volume was turned off the communications appeared happy, nervous, frustrated, suspicious, sad, and even angry. Some people were running to make the flight while others appeared to be frustrated because they might miss the flight. In one scene a woman ran to hug a man dressed in military uniform while crying but she also seemed happy. In another scene a dog found a white substance in several containers. The dog ran around the container and police officers stared talking to each other rapidly while checking all the containers.  Then it switched to a car flipped over on the road and a woman was crying.  All of a sudden a young man looked angry while holding a paper in his hand.
When the volume was turned on the man in the military uniform just came from the war. Apparently she was trying to surprise him but he surprised her instead with a proposal. The white substance in the container found by the dog was drugs. My assumption was correct about the containers being drugs. The flipped over car was of a man in an accident but the man was not showed. The person crying was his mother and wife. The man with the papers in his hand was angry/ frustrated because he could not sit next to his girlfriend/wife. This scene was interesting because he knew they were not sitting next to each other prior to the flight.

My assumptions would have been different if I knew the show prior to watching. I would have general idea about the characters but there is no absolute certainty I would understand the plot of the show. The great thing about watching a show like Airport 24 7 Miami is the scene change every 5 minutes showing a multitude of characters in different situations. Individuals are not scripted, in essence, many watching a show like this would observe countless of emotion

  1. Hi Georgiana!!

I enjoyed reading your post. However, I never seen this TV show as well. But looking at the name of show Airport 24/7 Miami, has to do with being in an airport setting. By the different scene in the movie as well as their verbal and nonverbal communication it gave you the impression of being sad, frustrated, crying because that really goes on in a airport setting. Waiting on flights, flights are being delayed, people aboarding planes with drugs. By reading your post, I think this was a great TV show.

  2. Georgiana,

What an interesting show to watch with the sound off and on! I bet it was interesting trying to interpret the context of each scenario. I learned that non-verbal cues can tell us a lot about what is going on in a situation, however the verbal communication allows us to better understand the various contexts. I think if I had been watching the show you watched I would have had a hard time determining the relationships between the individuals in each scene when the sound was off. Were there any non-verbal cues that you interpreted wrong when the sound was off? Thanks for sharing!

  3. Georgiana,

Thank you for sharing your experience! I agree, having history of the show gives stronger support for understanding the characters, their roles, and the plot of the show! It was interesting tuning into the nonverbal communication skills. Doing so made me more aware of the interactions between the characters and less able to focus on the plot at all times.

  4. Georgiana,

I found it a little confusing not being able to hear the conversations, but it was a good exercise to bring an awareness of nonverbal cues and actions. In an airport and watching people you sort of get a sense of things happening around you by watching the nonverbal cues and there is always a variety of emotions.

I think with people you know just like the television show if we know the characters we have a better understanding of the nonverbal cues.
