Great Communication

For the purpose of this assignment I decided to watch television interviewers in order to see what makes a great communicator. For the past few days I watched several people.  I watched Howard Stern, Ellen, Wendy Williams and Gale King. These people have one thing common, they make the guest comfortable . First, I know Howard Stern is very controversial, but when I watched him in the studio talking to his guest he genuinely appears curious about what’s going on in their lives. In my opinion it takes a great communicator to get someone to open up and start to talk. Another person is Gale King. I never really watched her show before but I liked it. The reason is because it’s just her and the guest talking. The conversation always appears intimate and personal. It’s felt like I was ease dropping on a private discussion.

The Ellen show looked like a lot of fun for the audience members. It did not matter who Ellen had on the show they were always laughing and having a good time.  The discussions were always relaxed and rarely of serious nature. When the guest is in the chair Ellen starts the discussion by saying something funny. Next, I watched Wendy Williams.  I did not think I would like the show but to my surprise I really enjoyed it. The show starts with Wendy sitting in a chair talking to the audience for 10 minutes performing a monologue called (hot topics).  Wendy is a great conversationalist because she makes it look so easy.
I would love to model some of my own communication behavior after these individuals because at the end of the day it’s all about making people feel comfortable. All interviewers appeared to have a real interest in what the guest had to say. The goal  for me is when people are talking I want them to feel they are being listen to.

  1. I think this was a great idea to observe individuals from their TV show as competent communicators. I enjoy watching Ellen and Wendy Williams show as well. They are always laughing or making jokes about something, especially Ellen. I like when Wendy discuss the hot topics, I be wondering are they really true. You provided some great communicator pointers on each individuals..

  2. I also love Gayle King and she actively listens to the individuals she interviews and appears to make them comfortable as if she has a personal connection through her body language and tone of voice. She comes across as authentic to me, which is an important skill in competent communication.

  3. All the talk show hosts you picked have good communication skills and yes their guests always seem comfortable. It does take a good conversationalist to be able to make someone open up and talk. It's not easy talking about one's life, especially for celebrities. Laughter is a good way to ease and calm people down. Thank you for sharing.
