The idea of having to deal with a major catastrophe is very
alarming and sad, but the very thought that I can only bring three items from
my culture is even worse. Then, I am
told that I can only take one item to this unknown land is even more alarming
and heart wrenching. Given the fact that
my family is also taking the journey with me I feel some comfort.
My first item would be a picture of the Jamaican National
fruit, Ackee.
I would explain that ackee represents the rich culture of Jamaica and the
pride in cooking for family and friends.
I would take a picture of Bob
Marley.
I would explain that Bob Marley represents the rich culture of reggae music along with singing and dancing.
I would take a flag of Jamaica.
I would explain to my host country that the flag represents the rich culture
of the Jamaican people.
If I am told that I have to choose one item to bring and
leave two, I would bring the flag because it represents the people. I would tell my new countrymen about the
meaning of the flag. The black represents
the fact that 90% percent of Jamaicans are descendant from Africa as slaves. The gold represents the rich beauty and
natural landscape of the island. The green represents the land. I would explain
the Jamaica is a prideful country and love all people. In fact the slogan is “Out of many, one people”.
This assignment gave me some insights into how much my culture mean to me. Even though I was raised in the United States it's very clear I was influenced by the culture in my family home.

Hi Georgiana! Thanks for sharing your post! I had the opportunity to vacation in Jamaica three summers ago and I was able to step out the resort and meet the people of Jamaica. Jamaica is truly a rich country I had an amzaing time and can't wait to go back! I believe your items truly represent your culture and it gave me a better understanding of Jamaica. Thanks for the videos as well!
ReplyDeleteGeorgiana,
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the choice of items you would take. They really show how much your country means to you. I, too, chose an item related to the food of my family culture. I chose my box of family recipes, because food and cooking is something that has always brought my family together. Enjoying foods from my family culture reminds me of many fond family memories. Thank you for sharing!
Hello Georgiana,
ReplyDeleteNo doubt that your hosts would fall in love with Jamaica, its people, and its culture. From what you expressed in your blog post, it seems that you would not need any memorabilia to give your hosts a sense of what your old culture was about. Your passion about Jamaica and Jamaican culture is so huge that even the most recalcitrant individual would be compelled to love this country and its culture. Great post! ¡QuĂ© viva Bob Marley!
