Personal Research Journey

Deciding what topic to research was difficult. There are so many options and it was challenging to narrow down my search to a specific topic. My topic of choice (Is there a correlation between poverty and children with learning disabilities?) My focus will be on urban American population of young children. In my personal experience in education I have worked with several young African American and Hispanics young children that are classified with a learning disability. I was and still continue to be very curious as to why I came across so many young boys in my community who had a varied degree of classification pertaining to learning a disability. Another question I ask myself (Are children in certain communities over classified or is the classification justify?)   I hope to find reliable information on this topic.
This course so far is very interesting because I am learning the necessary tools in order to research quality information. The assignments for this week in relation to the  research chart is also excellent because it’s another way for me to relax and approach this course and future courses to come in the most realistic way.

  1. Georgiana, good topic and good luck with the research! In my opinion, I think children living in poverty education is negatively impacted by their circumstance, due to the stress children experience from those type of conditions. It's hard for children to concentrate and learn in school when they are worried about their next meal, where they will sleep, if dad lost his job, etc. I'm not sure if it only applies to Hispanic or African American children, b/c there are other race of children that experience poverty as well; so I would suggest you pay attention to how they are affected.

  3. Geargiana,
I am excited about your topic. It is sad that children are a product of their environment. Many children in my area struggle in school because of circumstances and their environment. I hope you find information that may help me become knowledgeable with this topic. Thank you.
