Getting to Know Your International Contacts

Sandra Eugene is teacher born in St. Lucia. I met her while she was studying in America. She provided me with new insights into St. Lucian people, government and Early Childhood educational system.
The banana industry has had decreasing profits in recent years; this has been due to increasing transportation costs. The transportation costs have increased the selling price of bananas which individuals are unwilling to pay. Another industry suffering is small parts manufacturing and assembling.  The country’s primary focus in the past on agricultural infrastructure has resulted in the government needing to redevelop their infrastructure to enhance their non-agricultural industry.  The government has started making the necessary changes but the progress is slow going.  The government is facing a rising population and the system is having difficulties meeting the needs of individuals living in poverty. The lack of services, such as primary care facilities, are affecting a woman’s ability to seek employment. It appears that a large number of poor St. Lucians have a self –defeating mindset in regards to discussing programming provided by the government that will allow women to further their education and to work.

  1. Hi Georgiana,

    Thanks for sharing!
Has the decline in the banana industry increased child poverty in St. Lucia?

  2. Hi Georgiana, thanks for sharing the insightful information that you have gained from your organization. Do you know how much is the transportation cost? Although the transportation cost has increased I still do not feel that this should stop buyers from buying the bananas because this is the cheapest fruit you can buy and get many of. Thanks again for your insightful information. I really enjoyed reading about it.

  3. Thank you Georgiana for sharing this information. It interesting to know what goes on in other countries and see that some things are similiar. It is sad to see that women still have to fight hard to be accepted and gain respect. Once again thank you for sharing.

  4. Very interesting. It's very sad that the government is having difficulties of not having the ability to meet the needs of the individuals that are suffering from poverty. It also makes you sad that the women don't services, and child care facilities so that women can work. I know that can be hard. Thanks for the information.
