"Using Social Media to Get Connected."

To be honest I’m still struggling when it comes to the world of social media. I really can’t recall a past experience with social media, I can only think in the present. It took me a long time to sign on to Facebook. My mother had Facebook before I did. In fact, she said, “Where you have been Facebook is all the rage.” At that moment I felt older than my own mother.  Despite my initial apprehension, I have come to realize that social media can be very beneficial, especially if people are voicing their opinion about a particular issue or advocating for a cause.

After signing on to the new rage and learning about the benefits of social media, I can say I’m still not in love with it, but I do see the benefits of it. When it comes to advocacy work it is very useful understand when and how to use social media. Twitter is a great way to get the message out quickly, and have an immediate response in real time. Another outlet is YouTube; advocacy groups can use YouTube to get their message out by allowing the audience to view what the organization is all about.

Millions of people are connected to social media all over the world. It is a tool to promote any cause  affecting people in need. I can use twitter, Facebook, and create my own blog in order to get my message out. When people are connected through the world of understanding they will most likely setup and try to help others in need. I want to ask my colleagues, how can social media help promote your advocacy agenda and what other social media outlet can I use to promote mine?

  1. Georgiana,
Social media can have its drawbacks and benefits. I like Facebook. Although a lot of people use Facebook to gossip, advocates can use Facebook to create group pages and communicate with large audiences. Therefore, it is important to take advantage of social media technology to promote advocacy goals.

  2. I think that sometimes any type of media exploits children and it may be unfortunate but there are pro and cons to any issues related to children. I think that exposing the public to issues that can create programs to support children is going to benefit them and their families.
