Communication with different groups and cultures

·
I find myself communicating differently with people from cultures other than my own. The reason is because I have a real interest in learning the differences and similarities in all cultures. When I am communicating with children I use verbal and nonverbal cues. If I am in the company with friends I am much more relax and informal. When I am in the company of my work colleagues I tend to be more formal especially if it's my boss.
However, if the colleague and I share a genuine friendship I am less formal in fact, I am very silly because I live to laugh.  I have learned some effective strategies due to my communication with people. First, I have learned to be patient and open-minded. Next, I pay very close attention to nonverbal cues. Finally, I try not to rush the communication and then wait to respond. I think one of the greatest gift anyone can give themselves is to purposely communicate with someone who is different form their culture, traditions, ethnicity, and race. This will allow a world of open possibilities and a new way to form friendships.

  1. Georgiana,

Those are very good strategies that you shared to effectively communicate with others. Loving to laugh and having a good sense of humor plays an important role in building strong and healthy relationships. I believe this to be a key to 40 years of marriage—my husband and I have learned to laugh and to see the humor in life even through difficult times. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Georgiana,

I can very much relate to your experiences with communication across cultures and groups! I especially found it interesting how we do communication much more informally with those that we are closest to! You stated when growing to be an effective communicator you've learned not to rush the communication, this is great! I think this happens unintentionally and individuals aren't even aware, myself included. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Georgiana,

I find myself communicating differently among others individuals as well. I know that being around people that I talk to on a regular basis, I'm more relaxed and in tune with them. On the otherhand, individuals that I'm meeting for the first time as well as certain co-workers. I jsut sit and observe in their presence. I'm more observant than a talker. I see Georgiana that we have something in common. Lol!! The silliness and the laughing. I love to laugh. Good for the soul.
